Self-Promotion: The Key to Standing Out in the Job Market

Recently, Nico Bour, CEO of Joppy, has been on the hunt for a Sales & Customer Manager. While he’s been fortunate enough to find great talent, he’s surprised by how poorly some people market themselves. In the end, your profile on a CV, LinkedIn, Joppy, or wherever you choose to present yourself is essential. It’s like your “portfolio” for a model or designer—it must reflect your best qualities.

Finding a job is essentially a sales process. And what does that mean? It means maximizing the positives while downplaying the negatives. You should never lie, but you must highlight what truly matters. However, Nico has seen dozens of sales-oriented CVs that leave much to be desired:

✖ They lack quantitative data about their achievements.
✖ They don’t specify the concrete missions they have undertaken.
✖ They fail to mention which stakeholders they have worked with.
✖ They don’t detail the types of negotiations they’ve engaged in.

And we’re talking about sales! We need to know how you sell yourself and how you highlight key points that make us want to contact you. If you can’t present yourself well in a simple profile, how will you do so in your daily work?

This issue extends to developers as well. It’s crucial to understand what projects you’ve worked on, how you approached your tasks, and how you’ve handled complex projects. Nico is tired of hearing about the infamous “imposter syndrome.” Perhaps sometimes we tend to go too far in the opposite direction. Our Spanish culture can play a role in this caution, where we often find it difficult to share our achievements.

But let’s talk about what we do well! Everyone has something to highlight, so LET’S SAY IT! 📢

Lastly, something that really annoys Nico is CVs that look like a list of keywords. Recruiters are often to blame for this by placing too much importance on skills listings. He’s seen too many CVs where the person’s title is littered with terms like: Sales | Internationalization | Sales Strategy | Outbound | Negotiation… This isn’t a supermarket of skills where the one with the longest list wins.

So, please, let’s focus on presenting the truly relevant skills in a well-rounded manner. Because finding a job is about knowing how to sell yourself. We compete with many talented individuals for the same position, and unfortunately, it’s not always the best candidate who comes out on top; sometimes, it’s the one who sells themselves best.

Let’s put in the effort on this, it’s really not that hard! 💪✨
